A study published in theJournal of Clinical Psychiatryindicates that a small group of individuals are more likely to have a psychological condition called a mood disorder.1 The researchers, from the University of Oxford, UK, investigated whether certain antidepressants may help patients with bipolar disorder.
The researchers, from the University of Oxford, UK, found that those with bipolar disorder had a lower risk of developing depression and/or suicidal thoughts than those with other types of bipolar disorder.2
“These findings suggest that the antidepressant medications may be beneficial for bipolar disorder treatment, particularly for patients who are in early-stage bipolar disorder,” said the study's lead author, Dr. M. P. H. S. Pang and colleagues.
The researchers said that their findings were “very interesting” and “the most important finding of the study” is that people with bipolar disorder who take an antidepressant medication for a long time, even when taking their first episode, are less likely to have depression and/or suicidal thoughts.3
The study, published in the, included a total of 7,300 participants. The participants were followed for the first year and then annually for up to 12 years.
Although the study found no difference in depression and/or suicidal thoughts between the two groups, the researchers did note that people taking an antidepressant medication were twice as likely to have depression and/or suicidal thoughts as those taking a placebo medication. The researchers also noted that people taking an antidepressant medication for a long time were more likely to have depression and/or suicidal thoughts compared to those on a placebo.
“Although this finding is interesting, it is important to note that we know for certain that many people with bipolar disorder may experience depression and/or suicidal thoughts, and that this is not true for everyone,” said the study's lead author, Dr. Pang.
Dr. Pang, who is the study's lead author, said that people taking an antidepressant medication for a long time should be on a low dose to avoid side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and sleep problems.
“It is important to note that we cannot say for sure whether these results are related to the medication or the individual taking the medication, but it is possible that the medication or the individual taking the medication may have caused depression,” she said.
“If you have bipolar disorder, you may have a lower risk of depression and/or suicidal thoughts,” said Pang. “But if you have a depressed mood disorder, you may be more likely to have depression and/or suicidal thoughts, especially if you have been on an antidepressant for a long time.”
Pang said that people who take a combination of a medication called methylphenidate (Ritalin) and bupropion (Wellbutrin) for a long time should be on a low dose to avoid side effects. The combination is usually started at the lowest effective dose, and the study found no significant differences in depression and/or suicidal thoughts between the two groups.“Given that there were no differences in depression and/or suicidal thoughts between the two groups, this may be an indication that the medication may have caused depression and/or suicidal thoughts,” Pang added.

ution, p. 611This drug contains atomoxetine. It is prescribed for the treatment of narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADAD).
Atomoxetine is used to treat ADHD, as part of a treatment program that includes stimulant medications.
Dosage: Take one capsule once a day. The recommended dose is 10 mg (at least 1 in every 6 people who take it).
Side effects:
The most common side effects include headache, dizziness, nervousness, irritability, nausea, vomiting, and flushing. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Get medical help right away if you continue to have symptoms of pain or fever, joint pain, muscle stiffness, or tingling hands or feet. This medication can cause a severe condition, called peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms include tingling or burning sensations when you rub your fingers or fingernails over your skin.
